Negotiations for Hostage Release and Gaza War Plans Announced by Netanyahu
Israeli Prime Minister outlines dual objectives: hostage release and military dominance in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that he has initiated talks aimed at securing the release of all hostages held by Hamas and ending the conflict in Gaza on terms deemed "acceptable to Israel." Speaking to Israeli troops, Netanyahu revealed that his cabinet has approved a significant military offensive targeting Gaza City, despite domestic and international criticism. This announcement follows a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire, facilitated by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, which includes the release of half the remaining hostages. However, Netanyahu has not endorsed this proposal.
In a video during a visit to the Gaza division headquarters, he voiced his commitment to "immediately begin negotiations for the release of all our hostages." Netanyahu maintained that the missions of overpowering Hamas and securing hostages were intertwined, yet details about upcoming discussions were sparse.
Israeli officials have expressed reservations about relinquishing hostages through a partial ceasefire arrangement, with Netanyahu’s office asserting that Israel would only consider a deal that secures the release of all hostages simultaneously. Key demands for concluding the conflict include disarming Hamas, ensuring the demilitarization of Gaza, establishing Israeli oversight along the Gaza perimeter, and instituting governance unassociated with Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.
Israel estimates that around 20 of the 50 hostages are still alive following nearly two years of hostility. As Israeli military operations intensified in eastern Gaza City, where heavy bombardments were reported, the IDF warned medical personnel and international organizations to prepare for the evacuation of Gaza City's one million residents to safer areas in the south. Hamas's health ministry condemned any plans that could jeopardize the dwindling health infrastructure in the region. In the wake of failed indirect ceasefire talks last month, Netanyahu declared a strategic goal to gain full control over the Gaza Strip.
This escalation of military activity is part of an ongoing response to a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant casualties, including around 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals. Meanwhile, the health ministry in Gaza claims over 62,000 deaths have occurred since hostilities began, with these figures being cited as the most reliable by the UN and other agencies monitoring the conflict.
