In a heartwarming twist of fate, an 80-year-old Zambian grandmother has captured the fashion world’s attention, becoming an unexpected style icon and social media sensation. Margret Chola, known as "Legendary Glamma," has charmed 225,000 Instagram followers with delightful fashion photographs thanks to her granddaughter, Diana Kaumba, a stylist based in New York City.
The inspiration for their imaginative "Granny Series" emerged when Kaumba visited Zambia to commemorate her father's passing, who had always instilled a love for fashion in her. With outfits left unworn, she spontaneously invited her grandmother to explore this new world of fashion, leading to an adventurous creative collaboration.
"I didn’t have anything planned, so I thought, ‘Why not?’" Ms Chola recalled, excitedly embracing the opportunity to step into the limelight. Adorned in vibrant and eclectic ensembles like a dazzling silver pantsuit and colorful layered dresses, Chola found a new sense of self-worth in the garments, feeling empowered to "conquer the world" as she explored her youthful side through bold styles.
As their project gained momentum, the Granny Series blossomed into a viral phenomenon, particularly after her granddaughter debuted photos of the grandmother in striking red dresses, chunky jewelry, and even a sparkling crown. Notably, Ms Chola expressed her amazement at the global affection she received, admitting, "I didn’t know I could make such an impact at this age."
Setting the stage for multiple creative photoshoots, the picturesque backdrop of her rural village, complete with mango trees and rustic settings, added to the charm. Their photo sessions, rich in vibrant colors and maximalist styles, highlighted glitzy accessories, from oversized sunglasses to striking hats, drawing directly from Chola's personal style preferences and history.
Kaumba's aspiration extends beyond fashion; she aims to celebrate and represent older generations, showing that they have significant contributions to make. This project has led other granddaughters to enlist Kaumba's help in styling their own grandmothers, ages ranging from 70 to 96, exemplifying the series’ inspirational ripple effect.
Reflecting on her experiences, Ms Chola, who faced significant personal challenges in her youth, expressed hope: "I want my story to inspire everyone to live freely without the fear of judgment. You cannot change your past, but you can determine your future."
