Defectors from Deception: Russian Couple’s Journey from Disillusionment to Defiance

After moving to Ukraine out of disillusionment with Russia, Sergei and Tatyana Voronkov became informants for Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. Their story includes perilous interrogations, a narrow escape to Lithuania, and strained family ties resulting from their actions against the Russian state.

Sergei and Tatyana Voronkov, once critical of Russia’s political climate, chose an unexpected path that led them to become informants for Ukraine. The couple relocated to Ukraine in 2014, seeking respite from Putin's regime post-Crimea annexation. They settled in Novolyubymivka, adopting a pastoral life until the full-scale invasion in February 2022 disrupted their peace.

The couple's life took a dramatic turn when Tatyana heard a missile soar over their village. Upon witnessing a Russian military convoy, she quickly sought to assist Ukraine's defense forces using a Telegram contact, thus beginning their role as informants. They carefully documented military movements, believing they were contributing to a noble cause, not treason.

Sergei's capture in April 2024 by armed men marked a pivotal moment. Subjected to harsh interrogation tactics, he initially denied his actions but confessed under duress after days of isolation. Meanwhile, Tatyana tirelessly searched for his whereabouts, relying on their son in Moscow to mobilize help. After a lengthy detention, Sergei was released under unexplained circumstances, yet they suspected constant surveillance.

Under pressure, the Voronkovs devised an escape plan to Lithuania, selling their belongings to support their journey. Despite multiple complications and a fake passport procured through risky channels, they successfully reached Lithuania. Despite legal troubles surrounding the forged document, they have sought asylum and received acknowledgment from the Ukrainian military for their courageous contributions.

However, their actions have come at a cost. Their son severed ties with them, deeply impacted by their betrayal of Russia, and Sergei's mother remains unwaveringly loyal to the Kremlin. Still, the couple remains resolute about their choice, believing that only a change in Russia’s political humanity will prompt their return.
