Shocking Discovery: Missing Indian Journalist's Body Recovered in Septic Tank

The remains of Mukesh Chandrakar, a journalist known for exposing corruption, were discovered under tragic circumstances, prompting widespread outrage and demands for justice.

Mukesh Chandrakar, a 32-year-old journalist from Chhattisgarh, was found dead in a septic tank after reporting on corruption in public construction projects. His mysterious disappearance on New Year’s Day has led to three arrests, and his family and media advocates demand a thorough investigation amid rising concerns for journalist safety in India.

The body of Mukesh Chandrakar, a missing journalist from India, was discovered concealed in a septic tank in Chhattisgarh state, shocking the nation. The 32-year-old freelance journalist and YouTube content creator had vanished on New Year's Day, triggering a search initiated by his family. Following an investigation that traced his mobile phone signal, authorities uncovered his remains on Friday within the confines of a compound owned by a road construction contractor in the Bijapur town area.

Initial police searches of the area had yielded no results, but further examination on January 3 revealed Chandrakar's body underneath concrete slabs placed over the septic tank, located near a badminton court. According to investigations, his body exhibited severe injuries indicative of a violent blunt-force trauma.

Well-known for his critical reporting on alleged corruption in public infrastructure projects, Chandrakar’s death has drawn attention from media watchdogs and advocacy groups. Following the discovery, the Press Council of India urged a comprehensive report from state authorities, while Chhattisgarh's chief minister expressed his profound sorrow over the incident and announced the formation of a special investigation team.

Reports indicate that among the three individuals detained in connection to his death is Chandrakar's cousin, with another main suspect, the owner of the property, currently evading capture. In response to the tragedy, local journalists have expressed their outrage, demanding stringent action against the suspects involved.

The murder of journalists in India remains a critical issue, particularly for those investigating corruption and environmental malpractice. Fatalities such as that of Mukesh Chandrakar are becoming increasingly frequent, as highlighted by the report from the organization Reporters Without Borders, citing that three to four journalists lose their lives annually due to their reporting activities in India, marking it as one of the most perilous environments for journalists globally.
