**Nigerian Air Force Strikes Result in Civilian Casualties: 16 Killed in Alleged Mistake**

The Nigerian military faces backlash following an air strike that mistakenly killed civilians instead of targeted bandits.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage among rights groups and the local community, questioning the military's operational oversight.

In an unfortunate turn of events in Zamfara State, Nigeria, at least 16 civilians were killed during a military air strike aimed at suspected criminal gangs. The Nigerian Air Force acknowledged the operation but expressed "grave concern" over the unintended loss of innocent lives. Locals reported that the victims, many of whom were part of local vigilante groups, were mistakenly identified as criminals while they were defending their communities from notorious gangs that have long plagued the region with kidnapping and violence for ransom.

The air strikes specifically targeted areas in Zurmi and Maradun, purportedly resulting in the successful elimination of several bandit members and the rescue of some kidnapped victims. However, the military's acknowledgment of civilian casualties has ignited a wave of grief and anger, leading to local expressions of sorrow and a call for accountability from rights organizations such as Amnesty International.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the victims were returning from a successful attempt to drive away the bandits when the strikes occurred. A local resident noted, "We have recovered 16 bodies from the attacks, and many others were critically injured." Amnesty International put the death toll higher at 20, demanding an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident.

Critics have raised questions about the legitimacy of using air raids in a civilian context, labeling the deployment of such tactics as reckless and unlawful. Over the years, Nigeria has seen a troubling pattern of accidental attacks, including a tragic strike during a religious gathering in Kaduna in which a significant number of civilians lost their lives.

As the conflict between security forces and bandit groups continues, many are left questioning the methods employed by the military and the imperative need for stringent operational protocols to prevent future tragedies. The Nigerian Air Force has stated an ongoing investigation will seek to clarify the sequence of events and reassure the public of their commitment to safety, yet rising civilian casualties remain a contentious point in Nigeria’s struggle against banditry and violence.
