Surviving Tragedy: Boy Who Lost Family in Gaza Airstrike Flies to Italy for Medical Care
Adam al-Najjar, an 11-year-old survivor of a devastating airstrike in Gaza, embarks on his journey to Italy for critical treatment following the loss of his father and nine siblings.
An 11-year-old boy, Adam al-Najjar, who survived an Israeli airstrike that killed his father and nine siblings in Gaza, is being transferred to Italy for urgent medical treatment. Scheduled to depart for Milan on Wednesday evening, he and his mother, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, represent one of the many affected families seeking help following the violence in the region.
The airstrike on their family home in Khan Younis occurred on May 23, leading to the deaths of Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar and ninety of their children. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that it was reviewing the incident. As they prepared for their journey, footage shared by Palestinian journalists showed Adam and Alaa departing from Gaza, signaling hope amid despair.
In a recent interview with Italian publication la Repubblica, Alaa revealed her son’s current medical condition, noting he is stable but has suffered severe injuries, including damage to bones and nerves in his left arm. The evacuation plan includes Adam and his mother, 17 others injured in the conflict, along with family members, crossing into Israel before flying to Italy in chartered flights organized by the Italian Air Force.
To date, over 150 Palestinian patients have received evacuation assistance to Italy for medical care, alongside more than 450 accompanying relatives, according to Italy’s foreign ministry. Tragically, Hamdi had just taken Alaa to work at Nasser Hospital when the fatal strike on their home occurred. Adam received life-saving treatment after the attack, where a surgeon described his condition upon arrival as critical, with extensive injuries.
The IDF has previously indicated in response to accounts of the airstrike that it targeted suspects in what it regarded as a combat zone. The ongoing conflict has seen reports of high civilian casualties, with over 54,981 fatalities recorded in Gaza since the start of the war as per the local health ministry.
