Violence Erupts in Ballymena as Protests Over Sexual Assault Case Escalate
Racially charged riots in Northern Ireland lead to injuries and property destruction following a court hearing for two teenage boys accused of assault.
Protests devolved into violence in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, following the court appearance of two 14-year-old boys charged with serious sexual assault. On Monday night, demonstrators clashed with police, leading to a chaotic scene where 15 officers were reported injured.
According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, officers endured several hours of “sustained attack,” with rioters unleashing Molotov cocktails, fireworks, and bricks. Many of the assailants donned masks, and some residential properties and businesses were destroyed—incidents believed to be driven by racial animus. Emergency responders evacuated three residents from four homes engulfed in flames, and several injured officers required hospitalization.
The events were sparked by a court hearing earlier that day for the two boys accused of attempting to sexually assault a teenage girl on Saturday night. While both boys have denied the charges, the nature of the allegations amplified tensions in the community. The initial demonstration, which began around 7:30 p.m. and was described as “initially peaceful,” soon escalated as masked individuals began to barricade streets and launch projectiles at police.
Influential far-right groups had seized upon the case and the ensuing violence, adding fuel to the fire on social media platforms. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson condemned the disorder, emphasizing the risks such violence poses to community safety, urging participants to reflect on their actions critically.
In addition to the unrest in Ballymena, a separate incident in the nearby village of Cullybackey, where a vehicle and property were damaged in a Molotov cocktail attack, is also being treated as a racially motivated hate crime, highlighting an alarming trend of escalating violence related to social unrest in the region. Police apprehended a 29-year-old male suspect in connection with the riots, working to restore order amid the chaotic aftermath.
