A military veteran is apprehended following a fatal shooting in Anaconda, Montana, that left four dead.
A military veteran accused of killing four individuals in a bar shooting in Anaconda, Montana, on August 1 has been apprehended, according to local officials. Michael Paul Brown, a US Army veteran, is alleged to have opened fire in the Owl Bar, a pub he frequently visited, leading to a tragic loss of life. Following the incident, a multi-agency manhunt was initiated, with authorities reporting that Brown fled to nearby hills, discarding his clothing in the process.
Montana's Attorney General, Austin Knudsen, expressed pride in the law enforcement's determination to locate and arrest the suspect. Brown was eventually found near Anaconda, a town of around 10,000 residents nestled in rugged mountainous territory. Local Governor Greg Gianforte also commended the coordinated response from law enforcement agencies throughout the state on social media platform X.
Witnesses and the bar's owner, David Gwerder, stated that Brown seemingly acted without warning, asserting that he had no personal grievances with any of the victims, whom he knew. Among those deceased are 64-year-old barmaid Nancy Lauretta Kelley and three patrons: 59-year-old Daniel Edwin Baillie, 70-year-old David Allen Leach, and 74-year-old Tony Wayne Palm.
Brown's military background includes service as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005, with a deployment to Iraq between 2004 and 2005. After the shooting, authorities discovered a white Ford-150 pick-up truck, which they believe was used for his getaway. However, they initially struggled to locate the suspect. A photo released by the police depicts Brown fleeing the scene barefoot and shirtless in only black shorts, reportedly taken shortly after he abandoned his belongings. Knudsen stated it is believed he later acquired new clothes and managed to evade capture for some time.
