In a coordinated operation, officials recovered more than 2,100 forged pieces, including fakes attributed to renowned figures such as Banksy, Andy Warhol, and Pablo Picasso.
Thirty-eight individuals have been arrested in connection with this extensive forgery ring, which is believed to have operated across multiple countries. The total potential market value of the seized artworks is estimated to be around €200 million (£165 million; $213 million). Law enforcement uncovered six separate forgery workshops, located in regions such as Tuscany and Venice, highlighting a sophisticated web of illicit art production.
The investigation began in 2023, when authorities seized roughly 200 forged pieces from a businessman in Pisa. This included a counterfeit drawing falsely attributed to the Italian modernist Amedeo Modigliani. The Carabinieri cultural squad, in conjunction with the Pisa prosecutors’ office, has described the operation as a significant step in protecting the integrity of Banksy's estate.
The counterfeiting network is known to have produced fakes of artworks from over 30 celebrated artists, including Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, and more.
