Thousands Flee Santorini Amid Rising Earthquake Activity

In the wake of unprecedented seismic activity, approximately 9,000 residents have evacuated Santorini, a popular Greek island, after experiencing over 300 earthquakes within 48 hours.

Given the escalating tremors, authorities have urged locals to leave the Old Port of Fira, primarily affecting the local population as the tourist season is not in full swing. An alarming 5.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Tuesday, prompting further concern. Local school closures are in effect, and the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has called for public calm, urging residents to remain vigilant as more tremors could persist for weeks. Many locals, now spending nights in their cars out of fear for structural safety, participated in long queues for ferries to the mainland, with various emergency flights having been arranged.

Despite no significant damage reported thus far, the sound and consistent shaking have taken a psychological toll on residents, prompting many to seek safety elsewhere. Tour guide Kostas Sakavaras, among those who left, described the ongoing seismic sounds as unsettling but manageable so far. The island's administration is preparing for potential larger tremors by sourcing shelters and food supplies. Moreover, experts remain diligent, analyzing earthquake data and ensuring the preparedness of citizens, given the unique geological characteristics of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc where Santorini is situated.
