Elderly Clubbers Defy Age at Brussels Nightlife Event
Brussels nonprofit brings joy and connection to senior residents through dance.
In a vibrant Saturday night at the Mirano nightclub in Brussels, the air was electrified with rhythmic beats and excited chatter, but the crowd featured an unusual presence: cheerful residents from local retirement homes, many of whom were in their 80s and 90s. Dressed in stylish outfits—men sporting suits and women adorned with makeup and sequins—they danced alongside younger club-goers, celebrating the joys of life late into the night.
“Every moment we spend here is precious,” remarked 99-year-old Guillaume Vanderweyen, who reveled in the vibrant atmosphere, feeling rejuvenated by the surrounding excitement. After 40 years away from the dance floor, Vanderweyen found himself moving to the infectious beats of popular artists, proving that age is just a number.
This delightful night out was orchestrated by Papy Booom, a Belgian nonprofit geared towards enriching the lives of older adults by tackling isolation and creating joyous gatherings. Along with Vanderweyen, 15 other residents from retirement homes danced freely, exploring a world of fun and connection that is often overlooked for the elderly.
Through activities like this, Papy Booom aims to foster community and combat loneliness, the often-unseen battle many seniors face. By bringing seniors into lively environments such as nightclubs, the initiative not only encourages social interaction but also showcases the vibrancy and zest for life that persists regardless of age.
