Ukraine Unleashes Historic Assault in Ongoing Conflict
Ukraine claims to have executed its most substantial strike yet, targeting key Russian installations.
On Tuesday, Ukraine targeted critical military sites within Russia, with the assault reaching locations hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Reports from the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces indicate that ammunition depots and chemical plants were among the primary targets. Sources linked to Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency labeled the assault a "painful blow" to Russia’s warfare capabilities.
In response, Russian defense systems claimed to have intercepted US-supplied Atacms missiles and UK-manufactured Storm Shadow cruise missiles, promising retaliation against Ukraine. The fallout from the overnight strikes led to the temporary suspension of operations at at least nine airports in central and western Russia, while local schools in the southwestern Saratov region closed their doors for safety. Explosions at a refinery, ammunition depots, and a chemical plant in the Bryansk border region caused significant concern, according to Ukrainian security reports.
Kyiv’s strikes reportedly extended to targets as far as 1,100 kilometers (approximately 700 miles) from the border, as damage emerged from a significant drone attack that left industrial facilities in Saratov compromised. Local authorities confirmed online classes for students due to safety concerns. Additional assaults were also reported in the Tula region, where air defense claimed to have intercepted 16 drones, and a gas storage site in Tatarstan faced similar attacks without casualties.
Meanwhile, Moscow initiated a drone offensive over Ukraine, prompting air raid alerts in Kyiv and surrounding areas. Ukraine's Air Force reported downing around 60 of the 80 drones launched, with no casualties reported in those attacks. As Ukraine seeks to regain momentum against advancing Russian forces, the geopolitical landscape may shift further with the imminent inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has expressed intentions to engage Vladimir Putin regarding a resolution to the ongoing war, although his strategies remain unclear.
