Container Ship's Naptime: Watch Officer Asleep at the Helm during Garden Crash
Watch officer faces charges after container ship veers off course and lands in Norwegian garden.
The investigation revealed that a Ukrainian man in his thirties was responsible for the vessel, which ran aground while navigating the Trondheim Fjord. The ship, identified as the Cypriot-flagged NCL Salten, narrowly avoided crashing into a house, instead landing in the garden of local resident Johan Helberg.
Helberg described the surreal moment he woke up to find the enormous vessel in his garden, just shy of crashing into his home. "It was so unreal," he remarked on the shock of seeing the ship up close. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Authorities have placed the watch officer under arrest for negligent navigation. Investigators are also assessing compliance with maritime regulations regarding working hours on the ship, which had a crew of 16 at the time of the incident. Reports indicate that this was not the first time the NCL Salten faced grounding issues, as it had previously run aground earlier this year before successfully freeing itself.
Police continue to work on determining the circumstances surrounding the grounding as efforts to refloat the vessel have yet to succeed.
