Tragedy Strikes: Over 50 Dead in Guinea Football Match Crush
At least 56 lives lost during chaotic football match amid referee controversy
At least 56 individuals have tragically lost their lives following a crush triggered by clashes during a football match in Guinea’s second-largest city of Nzérékoré, according to government reports. Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah labeled the incident a “stampede” and urged the public to remain calm.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with video footage shared on social media capturing large crowds trying to breach stadium walls and bodies strewn across the ground. A local doctor speaking anonymously detailed the harrowing situation inside the local hospital, stating, “The morgue is full; bodies are lined up as far as the eye can see.”
The unrest reportedly began when fans of the visiting team, Labé, hurled stones at the pitch, incited by what they perceived as poor officiating. One eyewitness recounted, “It all escalated after a disputed refereeing decision. Subsequently, supporters surged onto the pitch.”
In response to the uprising, local authorities deployed tear gas, leading to heightened chaos. A local journalist, Paul Sakouvogi, conveyed that internet access in the area has been restricted, with police heavily guarding hospital entrances, permitting entry only for medical personnel and barring others from providing assistance.
In a public statement, Prime Minister Bah expressed his condolences to the grieving families and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to bring those responsible to justice. He pledged comprehensive medical and psychological support for all those injured in the tragedy.
The ill-fated match was part of a tournament honoring President Mamady Doumbouya, who came to power through a coup in September 2021. Increasing scrutiny around Guinea’s football leadership has surfaced, particularly surrounding Feguifoot president Aboubacar Sampil, who is currently embroiled in allegations of corruption and has faced accusations of inciting violence at matches.
As the nation mourns, the need for evaluation of crowd management protocols in sporting events has never been more critical.
