As conflict escalates, North Korea provides refuge and care for Russian military casualties and children.
North Korea is re-establishing its Cold War-era bond with Russia by offering care to wounded Russian soldiers and hosting war orphans, according to a statement made by Alexander Matsegora, the Russian ambassador to North Korea. In a revealing interview published by the state-controlled Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Matsegora disclosed that both Russian soldiers and children orphaned by the ongoing conflict are now being sheltered in North Korea.
"North Korea is presently hosting hundreds of injured troops from the special military operation addressing the situation in Ukraine, as well as an undetermined number of children who tragically lost their parents in the war," Matsegora stated. This announcement marks one of the earliest confirmations from either Russia or North Korea regarding the latter’s assistance in the conflict.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago, ties between the two countries have blossomed. North Korean soldiers have recently joined forces alongside Russian troops in confrontations. While North Korea has also witnessed substantial military losses, it continues to extend its healthcare facilities to support the rehabilitation of Russian soldiers.
In terms of its commitment to international solidarity, Matsegora emphasized that North Korea is providing its services without charge. Specifically, he noted the housing of Russian children at the Songdowon children’s recreation center in Wonsan. However, the ambassador did not clarify the duration of their stay or specific details regarding the orphaned children.
