India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed that his recent exchange with Russian President Vladimir Putin was particularly 'insightful' during their private discussions in a limousine on the sidelines of a summit in China.

The leaders conversed for 45 minutes, post which Modi shared a photo of their interaction, alluding to Putin's positive demeanor. Putin's spokesperson remarked, 'They were at home... They felt comfortable there, and that's why they continued the conversation.'

This friendly meeting followed warm gestures exchanged during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, seen as a strategic counter to US dominance under President Donald Trump.

Amidst this backdrop, Trump has imposed hefty tariffs nearing 50% on Indian products as a retaliatory measure against India’s procurement of Russian oil and military supplies. Despite these tariffs, India has shown no inclination to halt its trade with Russia, further solidifying its relationship with Putin.

At the summit, while thanking his counterparts, Putin expressed appreciation for India's and China's support regarding the ongoing Ukrainian crisis.

Modi's burgeoning ties with Putin come as the US has historically been a major trade partner for India, challenging the delicate balance of international relations.
