In a somber announcement, Ghana’s Chief of Staff Julius Debrah revealed that Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed tragically lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti region. The accident, which has been labeled a "national tragedy," also claimed the lives of six others, including Ghana's Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed and Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress party.
The helicopter, which was carrying three crew members and five passengers, reportedly lost contact shortly after taking off from Accra at 09:12 local time, en route to the gold-mining town of Obuasi for a scheduled national event. While the authorities are still investigating the crash, a directive has been issued to fly flags at half-mast in commemoration of the deceased. Chief of Staff Debrah extended condolences from President John Dramani Mahama and the government, acknowledging the service of the deceased to the nation.
The crew members identified were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. The nation stands united in grief during this tragic time.
