A partial collapse of a six-storey building under renovation in Madrid has resulted in four fatalities, prompting an urgent investigation.

Four people have died after a six-storey building that was being refurbished partially collapsed in the centre of the Spanish capital, Madrid.

The city's mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, confirmed the recovery of the last two bodies reported missing 15 hours after the incident on Hileras Street.

Local reports identified the victims as a 30-year-old Spanish woman managing the project and three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. Three other individuals sustained injuries.

The building, previously an office block, was in the process of being converted into a hotel, and authorities have initiated an investigation following the collapse.

Emergency services mobilized teams with drones and sniffer dogs to locate those trapped beneath the debris after the building fell at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Martinez-Almeida expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims in a message posted on X.

A construction worker reported he was busy pouring concrete when he noticed the building starting to collapse, escaping just as a cloud of dust enveloped the area.

While the façade of the building remained intact, the interior experienced significant destruction. The company overseeing the renovation, Rehbilita, had announced plans for a comprehensive overhaul to operate it as a four-star hotel.
